a note:
**Yue Fei (1103–1142)** was a revered Chinese general of the Southern Song Dynasty, famed for his loyalty and military brilliance. Born in Henan, he grew up during the Jurchen-led Jin Dynasty’s invasions, which overran northern China. His mother famously tattooed “serve the country with utmost loyalty” (精忠報國) on his back, embodying his lifelong ethos.
Yue Fei organized a militia, the “Yue Family Army,” renowned for discipline and victories against Jin forces. His campaigns reclaimed strategic territories, bolstering Southern Song resistance. However, his success alarmed Emperor Gaozong and corrupt chancellor Qin Hui, who favored appeasement. Despite nearing the Jin capital, Yue Fei was recalled under 12 urgent gold edicts.
Falsely accused of treason, he was imprisoned and executed in 1142. His death symbolized the Song court’s betrayal of loyal patriots. Posthumously exonerated, Yue Fei became a national hero, celebrated in folklore, temples, and operas. His legend endures as a paragon of unwavering loyalty and sacrifice, immortalized by his defiant epitaph: 天日昭昭, 天日昭昭 "The Heavens are bright, bright.".
