Why can't we remember the events of past lives?

It is a conviction of many that past lives are real.

You will have past lives and you will have  next lives.

Life is a continual process,   but nothing can be remembered,  and nothing can be repeated if you lose your memory.

And this might be the best design of life.

Life is a continuation.

But the self is not included in the continuation.

It seems a little confused:

But we must know the difference of the "self" and the "life".   They are not the same.

See the following:

"I believe I have lived in a past life, am living this life now, and will experience a next life in the future."

 What's wrong with this statement?

The word "I" may not be included in your past life.

You were not "you" in your past life.

 Life could be a long process going on and on, but the "self" is not.

 There will be only one "self" in all the history.

 You can repeat your "life", but you cannot repeat your "self".

 For example, if you are Li Bai,  you can write a poem and the poem will be  incorporated in future human lives, the poem is a "gene" for the future lives,  yet Li Bai is the only existence and he might not be there to enjoy reading the poem again.

 His life is here,  but he is not here.

 Because life is a function.

 Because life is a work.

 Because life is the work you have been doing.

 Because the work is "in" the total life of human beings.

 And this is not religion.

 This is nothing related to the unknown.

 This is a fact.

 This is the way life is designed by the unknown.

 And you might wonder: 

 Where is Li Bai?

 Yes, Li Bai is in human memory.  Li Bai is human no more.  But Li Bai is living in the momories of many. And Li Bai could be a pushing power for humans,  yet Li Bai is a history,  or a gene in the history,  but not a living person anymore.

 And I need to repeat here: 

We are not talking about religion,  we are searching for a fact about life.
